Rocky The Rebel Hindi Movie

Rocky belongs to the genre of films that fits into the 80's and 90's and no longer holds anything exciting or unique for the audiences. Rocky has a theme that is archaic; a storyline that has been done to death in bollywood and even the execution does absolutely nothing to lift the film to a higher level. The attempt to make the film commercial seems forced and therefore there are innumerable number of songs which hardly fit in the narrative. Even the overdose of action seems thrown into the script without having much of an aim. And the performances by all the lead characters are below the mark. The film revolves around Rocky who hates injustice in any form and when he sees injustice being done to anyone he loses his temper and always seems to get in way over his head. Rocky is hurt when he experiences injustice first-hand but he decides to fight this injustice and the system responsible for this. He loses his loved one and decides to avenge the death of his beloved by personally seeing to it that justice is meted out to her killers. This is the oft repeated story of one man's fight against the corrupt legal system to get justice. Unfortunately the film is a major disappointment and lacks in all the main areas like story concept, screenplay, script and performances.
The film belongs to the action genre; it has been produced by Narendra Bajaj and directed by Suresh Krissna. The star cast consists of Zayed Khan as the hot headed Rocky, Minissha Lamba, Isha Sharvani, Smita Jaykar, Rajat Bedi and Ashwin Kaushal. The music of the film has been composed by Himesh Reshammiya.
Rocky is a rebel right from the start, he likes to do things in his own way and own style. But there is one thing that Rocky decides never to accept and that is injustice in any form, he keeps getting into tiny squabbles because of his strong stance against injustice. He also condemns people who take the injustice meted out to them lying down. He invariably gets himself into many sticky situations because he keeps interfering when he sees injustice meted out to others. Due to this his relationship with his father too suffers a great deal as his father does not believe in his ideologies. In fact his father often tells him not to interfere in things that don't concern him but Rocky pays no heed to his father's sound advice. He believes that he can single handedly change society's apathy to those who suffer injustice.
Unfortunately the unthinkable happens, one day Rocky's girlfriend (Isha Sharvani) is killed right before his very eyes and he is blamed for her death. Now Rocky is stumped by the sheer magnitude of the injustice dished out to him to implicate him in the matter of his girlfriend's death. His parents try to shield him from the unpleasantness that follows by taking him to London and trying to make him start afresh. But after a while Rocky the Rebel returns to avenge the death of his girlfriend. He wants justice at any cost for himself, his family and even for his dead girlfriend. He takes it upon himself to achieve the Herculean task of going about and getting this justice and will do it through any and every means available to him. Rocky will get Justice at any cost.
The script of Rocky does not introduce any new concept, but harps time and again right through the film on a hero who loves to display his violent outburst and his song and dance sequences. A dose of drama is added when the girlfriend is killed and parts of the film attempt a comic twist but to no avail do any of them manage to hold the audiences attention. The concept of one man trying to change society and achieve justice has been done too many times and in too many films in Indian Cinema and hence the director's attempt to revive this genre of cinema does not work at all. Even the execution of the film is below average and all the aspects like the love angle, the action, the drama seems to be just thrown in for effect without any particular aim or goal so that it takes on a commercial aspect. Suresh Krissna's execution lacks finesse, style and even rationality.
Though the hero, Rocky does look like he is simply itching to shout, punch and break things violently, some of the action scenes can be qualified as average. Action co-coordinator Allan Amin does try to define Zayed's moves in a better manner. A song or two is foot-tapping. Apart from these few things there is not much that manages to come through in the film.
The film has a weak and outdated concept, the screenplay further weakens the film and the performances leave much to be desired. The film's music by Himesh is also a disappointment as the sound of Himesh's songs seem monotonous. An extremely sore point is Himesh's use of some strange English lyrics ‘My love for you is not a one night stand' definitely does not befit a typical bollywood song. There are way too many songs in the film and most of them don't fit well into this action packed film. Cinematography which depicts some of London's most hi-fi places is average but again seems unwarranted and forced to add the glamour bit.
Performances are below average from these young aspiring actors trying to carve a niche for themselves. Zayed attempts to break free from his boy next door image but his attempt at an action hero is definitely lacking. Although he manages to look the part of the angry young man at times he is unable to deliver a well rounded performance thereby proving that he is still not ready to carry off a film solely on his own. Isha Sharvani does not get much scope, but she does manage to look like the sweet girl next door. Minissha Lamba hardly gets enough screen space and is just about average in her performance.
The film has an old concept as the heart of its story, but unfortunately today's audiences prefer a different and unique storyline. Rocky is obsolete in concept, poor in execution and below average in performances. The cast though young and fresh unfortunately does not have any star appeal and even the talent quotient does not come through. At the box-office the film will definitely not make much of a mark.
